Kumamoto’s attractiveness

Kumamoto’s attractiveness

Kumamoto is located in the center of Kyushu, and is blessed with a rich history and culture, fresh spring water reserves and an abundant natural environment. Kumamoto City, a central metropolis, has flourished as a castle-town since feudal lord Kiyomasa Kato constructed the Kumamoto Castle in 1607 during Japan’s Warring States period. Today, the city proper boasts a population of approximately 740, 000 residents, with over 1 million inhabitants in the greater metropolitan area and continues to develop its long history as Kyushu’s center of governance, economy, culture, medicine and educational facilities. What’s more, having achieved the three major benchmarks of 1) restoring the Honmaru palace to commemorate the castle’s 400 year anniversary in 2008, 2) opening the Kyushu bullet-train line in 2011, and 3) becoming a government designated city in 2012, Kumamoto has come one step further in achieving its goal of becoming a truly attractive international city and strives to develop into a tourism and MICE city of choice both inside and outside Japan. In addition, Kumamoto Prefecture is home to a variety of natural and historical heritage sites including the two national public parks of Mt. Aso-one of the few calderas in the world-and Amakusa, an archipelago consisting of some 100 islands of varying sizes. Kumamoto has so much to offer: from the historical heritage to the traditional arts symbolized by Kumamoto Castle, from the pure spring water and fresh vegetables, fruits and local cuisine cultivated by Mt. Aso’s nutrient-rich soil to the accommodations, convention facilities, shopping districts and compact urban functions, from the passion of the citizens to the hospitality of our city, we want each and every one of our guests to get the full Kumamoto experience. Beginning with the Kumamoto City MICE staff members, and on behalf of all our citizens and prefectural residents, we welcome you to our city as the next destination of choice for your MICE exhibition and holiday stopover.
